How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines Young's modulus, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- Strain is a ratio of lengths, so it has no dimensions.
- Y = stress ÷ strain = [ML⁻¹T⁻²] ÷ 1
- So [Young's modulus] = [ML⁻¹T⁻²], also written [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²].
Same dimensions as Young's modulus: pressure, stress. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of Young's modulus?
[ML⁻¹T⁻²] (or [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²]), from Y = stress ÷ strain. Its SI unit is N m⁻² (Pa).
What are the dimensions of Young's modulus?
M: 1, L: -1, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of Young's modulus?
N m⁻² (Pa).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as Young's modulus?
pressure, stress, all [ML⁻¹T⁻²].
