How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines electric field, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- E = force ÷ charge = [MLT⁻²] ÷ [AT]
- So [electric field] = [MLT⁻³A⁻¹], also written [M¹L¹T⁻³A⁻¹].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of electric field?
[MLT⁻³A⁻¹] (or [M¹L¹T⁻³A⁻¹]), from E = F ÷ q. Its SI unit is N C⁻¹ = V m⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of electric field?
M: 1, L: 1, T: -3, A: -1.
What is the SI unit of electric field?
N C⁻¹ = V m⁻¹.
