How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines latent heat, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- L = heat ÷ mass = [ML²T⁻²] ÷ [M]
- So [latent heat] = [L²T⁻²], also written [M⁰L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as latent heat: gravitational potential. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of latent heat?
[L²T⁻²] (or [M⁰L²T⁻²]), from Q = mL. Its SI unit is J kg⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of latent heat?
