How to read a log table
Say you want log 23.45. The answer has two parts.
- Characteristic (the whole-number part). Count the digits before the decimal point and subtract 1. 23.45 has two, so the characteristic is 1. For a number below 1, count the zeros right after the decimal point, add 1 and make it negative: 0.0532 has one zero, so its characteristic is −2, written 2̄ (bar 2).
- Mantissa (the decimal part). Ignore the decimal point and take the first four digits: 2345. Go to row 23, column 4: 3692. Add the mean difference under 5 in the same row: 9. So the mantissa is 3692 + 9 = 3701.
So log 23.45 = 1.3701. The calculator above does these steps for you.
Logs worth knowing by heart
| Number | log10 | Number | log10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 0.3010 | 7 | 0.8451 |
| 3 | 0.4771 | e | 0.4343 |
| 5 | 0.6990 | π | 0.4971 |
With 2, 3, 5 and 7 you can work out the log of most numbers in pH and kinetics questions. Going the other way? Use the antilog table.

Questions students ask
How do you find the log of a number without a calculator?
Split it into the characteristic (from the number of digits) and the mantissa (from the log table, using the first four significant digits), then add them.
What is the mean difference in a log table?
A small correction for the fourth digit. Find it in the right-hand columns of the same row and add it to the main value.
What is log 2 and log 3?
log 2 = 0.3010 and log 3 = 0.4771. From these, log 4 = 0.6020, log 6 = 0.7781 and log 8 = 0.9030.
Can I use a log table in JEE or NEET?
No. Log tables and calculators aren't allowed in JEE Main or NEET. Questions that need logs either give the values or use log 2 and log 3, so learn those.
