How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines work, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- W = force × displacement = [MLT⁻²] × [L]
- So [work] = [ML²T⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as work: energy, torque, heat. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of work?
[ML²T⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻²]), from W = F × d. Its SI unit is joule (J).
What are the dimensions of work?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of work?
joule (J).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as work?
energy, torque, heat, all [ML²T⁻²].
