How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines resistance, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- R = potential difference ÷ current = [ML²T⁻³A⁻¹] ÷ [A]
- So [resistance] = [ML²T⁻³A⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻³A⁻²].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of resistance?
[ML²T⁻³A⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻³A⁻²]), from R = V ÷ I. Its SI unit is ohm (Ω).
What are the dimensions of resistance?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -3, A: -2.
What is the SI unit of resistance?
ohm (Ω).
