How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines stress, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- stress = restoring force ÷ area = [MLT⁻²] ÷ [L²]
- So [stress] = [ML⁻¹T⁻²], also written [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²].
Same dimensions as stress: pressure, Young's modulus. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of stress?
[ML⁻¹T⁻²] (or [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²]), from stress = F ÷ A. Its SI unit is N m⁻² (Pa).
What are the dimensions of stress?
M: 1, L: -1, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of stress?
N m⁻² (Pa).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as stress?
pressure, Young's modulus, all [ML⁻¹T⁻²].
