How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines refractive index, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- n = speed of light in vacuum ÷ speed in the medium = [LT⁻¹] ÷ [LT⁻¹]
- So [refractive index] = [M⁰L⁰T⁰].
Same dimensions as refractive index: strain, coefficient of friction. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of refractive index?
[M⁰L⁰T⁰], from n = c ÷ v. Its SI unit is no unit.
What are the dimensions of refractive index?
Refractive index is dimensionless: it's a ratio of two quantities with the same dimensions.
What is the SI unit of refractive index?
no unit.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as refractive index?
strain, coefficient of friction, all [M⁰L⁰T⁰].
