How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines frequency, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- f = 1 ÷ time period = 1 ÷ [T]
- So [frequency] = [T⁻¹], also written [M⁰L⁰T⁻¹].
Same dimensions as frequency: angular velocity. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of frequency?
[T⁻¹] (or [M⁰L⁰T⁻¹]), from f = 1 ÷ T. Its SI unit is hertz (Hz).
What are the dimensions of frequency?
M: 0, L: 0, T: -1.
What is the SI unit of frequency?
hertz (Hz).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as frequency?
angular velocity, all [T⁻¹].
