How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines heat, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- Heat is energy in transfer, so it has the dimensions of work: [MLT⁻²] × [L]
- So [heat] = [ML²T⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as heat: work, energy, torque. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of heat?
[ML²T⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻²]), from Q (a form of energy). Its SI unit is joule (J).
What are the dimensions of heat?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of heat?
joule (J).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as heat?
work, energy, torque, all [ML²T⁻²].
