How the best-of-five percentage works
CBSE doesn't print an overall percentage on your marksheet. Colleges, scholarships and forms usually ask for the best of five: add your five highest subject totals (theory plus practical or internal marks) and divide by 5.
Many admissions, including most Delhi University courses, need a language in the five. That's why English stays in by default. Untick the box if your form allows any five.
Which percentage does JEE and NEET use?
- JEE (IIT, NIT, IIIT seats): the 75% rule uses five specific subjects: Physics, Maths, one of Chemistry/Biology/Biotech/vocational, a language, and one more. Use the 75% criteria calculator.
- NEET: only Physics, Chemistry and Biology together count.
Questions students ask
How do I calculate my CBSE percentage?
Add the marks of your best five subjects and divide by the total maximum marks of those five, then multiply by 100. With every subject out of 100, that's the same as dividing the total by 5.
Is English compulsory in the best five?
For CBSE's own pass rules, no. But many colleges, including most Delhi University courses, require one language in the five. Check your admission form.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For CBSE's old Class 10 CGPA scheme, multiply by 9.5. A CGPA of 8.6 is 81.7%.
Are practical marks included?
Yes. Use each subject's total: theory plus practical or internal assessment, usually out of 100.
