How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines inductance, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- Rearrange: L = EMF × time ÷ current
- = [ML²T⁻³A⁻¹] × [T] ÷ [A]
- So [inductance] = [ML²T⁻²A⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻²A⁻²].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of inductance?
[ML²T⁻²A⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻²A⁻²]), from EMF = L dI/dt. Its SI unit is henry (H).
What are the dimensions of inductance?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2, A: -2.
What is the SI unit of inductance?
henry (H).
