How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines Planck's constant h, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- Rearrange: h = E ÷ ν
- = [ML²T⁻²] ÷ [T⁻¹]
- So [Planck's constant h] = [ML²T⁻¹], also written [M¹L²T⁻¹].
Same dimensions as Planck's constant h: angular momentum. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of Planck's constant h?
[ML²T⁻¹] (or [M¹L²T⁻¹]), from E = hν. Its SI unit is J s.
What are the dimensions of Planck's constant h?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -1.
What is the SI unit of Planck's constant h?
J s.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as Planck's constant h?
angular momentum, all [ML²T⁻¹].
