How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines surface tension, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- S = force ÷ length = [MLT⁻²] ÷ [L]
- So [surface tension] = [MT⁻²], also written [M¹L⁰T⁻²].
Same dimensions as surface tension: spring constant. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of surface tension?
[MT⁻²] (or [M¹L⁰T⁻²]), from S = F ÷ l. Its SI unit is N m⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of surface tension?
M: 1, L: 0, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of surface tension?
N m⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as surface tension?
spring constant, all [MT⁻²].
