How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines magnetic moment, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- m = current × area = [A] × [L²]
- So [magnetic moment] = [L²A], also written [M⁰L²T⁰A¹].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of magnetic moment?
[L²A] (or [M⁰L²T⁰A¹]), from m = I × A. Its SI unit is A m².
What are the dimensions of magnetic moment?
M: 0, L: 2, T: 0, A: 1.
What is the SI unit of magnetic moment?
A m².
