How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines angular momentum, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- L = moment of inertia × angular velocity = [ML²] × [T⁻¹]
- So [angular momentum] = [ML²T⁻¹], also written [M¹L²T⁻¹].
Same dimensions as angular momentum: Planck's constant h. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of angular momentum?
[ML²T⁻¹] (or [M¹L²T⁻¹]), from L = Iω. Its SI unit is kg m² s⁻¹ (J s).
What are the dimensions of angular momentum?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -1.
What is the SI unit of angular momentum?
kg m² s⁻¹ (J s).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as angular momentum?
Planck's constant h, all [ML²T⁻¹].
