How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines entropy, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, K is temperature.
- ΔS = heat ÷ temperature = [ML²T⁻²] ÷ [K]
- So [entropy] = [ML²T⁻²K⁻¹], also written [M¹L²T⁻²K⁻¹].
Same dimensions as entropy: Boltzmann constant k. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of entropy?
[ML²T⁻²K⁻¹] (or [M¹L²T⁻²K⁻¹]), from ΔS = Q ÷ T. Its SI unit is J K⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of entropy?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2, K: -1.
What is the SI unit of entropy?
J K⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as entropy?
Boltzmann constant k, all [ML²T⁻²K⁻¹].
