How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines acceleration, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- a = velocity ÷ time = [LT⁻¹] ÷ [T]
- So [acceleration] = [LT⁻²], also written [M⁰L¹T⁻²].
Same dimensions as acceleration: acceleration due to gravity g. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of acceleration?
[LT⁻²] (or [M⁰L¹T⁻²]), from a = change in velocity ÷ time. Its SI unit is m s⁻².
What are the dimensions of acceleration?
M: 0, L: 1, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of acceleration?
m s⁻².
Which quantities have the same dimensions as acceleration?
acceleration due to gravity g, all [LT⁻²].
