How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines gravitational potential, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- V = work ÷ mass = [ML²T⁻²] ÷ [M]
- So [gravitational potential] = [L²T⁻²], also written [M⁰L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as gravitational potential: latent heat. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of gravitational potential?
[L²T⁻²] (or [M⁰L²T⁻²]), from V = W ÷ m. Its SI unit is J kg⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of gravitational potential?
M: 0, L: 2, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of gravitational potential?
J kg⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as gravitational potential?
latent heat, all [L²T⁻²].
