How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines magnetic field B, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- Rearrange: B = F ÷ (qv)
- = [MLT⁻²] ÷ ([AT] × [LT⁻¹])
- So [magnetic field B] = [MT⁻²A⁻¹], also written [M¹L⁰T⁻²A⁻¹].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of magnetic field B?
[MT⁻²A⁻¹] (or [M¹L⁰T⁻²A⁻¹]), from F = qvB. Its SI unit is tesla (T).
What are the dimensions of magnetic field B?
M: 1, L: 0, T: -2, A: -1.
What is the SI unit of magnetic field B?
tesla (T).
