How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines force, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- F = mass × acceleration = [M] × [LT⁻²]
- So [force] = [MLT⁻²], also written [M¹L¹T⁻²].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of force?
[MLT⁻²] (or [M¹L¹T⁻²]), from F = ma. Its SI unit is newton (N) = kg m s⁻².
What are the dimensions of force?
M: 1, L: 1, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of force?
newton (N) = kg m s⁻².
