How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines electric potential (voltage, EMF), then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time, A is electric current.
- V = work ÷ charge = [ML²T⁻²] ÷ [AT]
- So [electric potential (voltage, EMF)] = [ML²T⁻³A⁻¹], also written [M¹L²T⁻³A⁻¹].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of electric potential (voltage, EMF)?
[ML²T⁻³A⁻¹] (or [M¹L²T⁻³A⁻¹]), from V = W ÷ q. Its SI unit is volt (V) = J C⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of electric potential (voltage, EMF)?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -3, A: -1.
What is the SI unit of electric potential (voltage, EMF)?
volt (V) = J C⁻¹.
