How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines torque, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- τ = distance × force = [L] × [MLT⁻²]
- So [torque] = [ML²T⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as torque: work, energy, heat. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of torque?
[ML²T⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻²]), from τ = r × F. Its SI unit is N m.
What are the dimensions of torque?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of torque?
N m.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as torque?
work, energy, heat, all [ML²T⁻²].
