How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines power of a lens, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- P = 1 ÷ focal length = 1 ÷ [L]
- So [power of a lens] = [L⁻¹], also written [M⁰L⁻¹T⁰].
Same dimensions as power of a lens: wave number, Rydberg constant. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of power of a lens?
[L⁻¹] (or [M⁰L⁻¹T⁰]), from P = 1 ÷ f. Its SI unit is dioptre (D) = m⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of power of a lens?
M: 0, L: -1, T: 0.
What is the SI unit of power of a lens?
dioptre (D) = m⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as power of a lens?
wave number, Rydberg constant, all [L⁻¹].
