How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines pressure, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- P = force ÷ area = [MLT⁻²] ÷ [L²]
- So [pressure] = [ML⁻¹T⁻²], also written [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²].
Same dimensions as pressure: stress, Young's modulus. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of pressure?
[ML⁻¹T⁻²] (or [M¹L⁻¹T⁻²]), from P = F ÷ A. Its SI unit is pascal (Pa) = N m⁻².
What are the dimensions of pressure?
M: 1, L: -1, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of pressure?
pascal (Pa) = N m⁻².
Which quantities have the same dimensions as pressure?
stress, Young's modulus, all [ML⁻¹T⁻²].
