How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines impulse, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- J = force × time = [MLT⁻²] × [T]
- So [impulse] = [MLT⁻¹], also written [M¹L¹T⁻¹].
Same dimensions as impulse: momentum. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of impulse?
[MLT⁻¹] (or [M¹L¹T⁻¹]), from J = F × t. Its SI unit is N s.
What are the dimensions of impulse?
M: 1, L: 1, T: -1.
What is the SI unit of impulse?
N s.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as impulse?
momentum, all [MLT⁻¹].
