How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines spring constant, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- k = force ÷ extension = [MLT⁻²] ÷ [L]
- So [spring constant] = [MT⁻²], also written [M¹L⁰T⁻²].
Same dimensions as spring constant: surface tension. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of spring constant?
[MT⁻²] (or [M¹L⁰T⁻²]), from F = kx. Its SI unit is N m⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of spring constant?
M: 1, L: 0, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of spring constant?
N m⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as spring constant?
surface tension, all [MT⁻²].
