How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines density, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- ρ = mass ÷ volume = [M] ÷ [L³]
- So [density] = [ML⁻³], also written [M¹L⁻³T⁰].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of density?
[ML⁻³] (or [M¹L⁻³T⁰]), from ρ = m ÷ V. Its SI unit is kg m⁻³.
What are the dimensions of density?
M: 1, L: -3, T: 0.
What is the SI unit of density?
kg m⁻³.
