How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines intensity of a wave, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- I = power ÷ area = [ML²T⁻³] ÷ [L²]
- So [intensity of a wave] = [MT⁻³], also written [M¹L⁰T⁻³].

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of intensity of a wave?
[MT⁻³] (or [M¹L⁰T⁻³]), from I = P ÷ A. Its SI unit is W m⁻².
What are the dimensions of intensity of a wave?
M: 1, L: 0, T: -3.
What is the SI unit of intensity of a wave?
