How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines momentum, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- p = mass × velocity = [M] × [LT⁻¹]
- So [momentum] = [MLT⁻¹], also written [M¹L¹T⁻¹].
Same dimensions as momentum: impulse. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of momentum?
[MLT⁻¹] (or [M¹L¹T⁻¹]), from p = mv. Its SI unit is kg m s⁻¹.
What are the dimensions of momentum?
M: 1, L: 1, T: -1.
What is the SI unit of momentum?
kg m s⁻¹.
Which quantities have the same dimensions as momentum?
impulse, all [MLT⁻¹].
