What do you want to work out?

NTA publishes this with the results. About 1–1.3 lakh per JEE Main shift.

Includes you.

The NTA formula

Percentile = 100 × (students in your shift with a raw score ≤ yours) ÷ (total students in your shift)

NTA calculates this separately for every shift, to 7 decimal places. So in a shift of 1,20,000 students, if 1,14,000 scored the same as you or less, your percentile is 100 × 1,14,000 ÷ 1,20,000 = 95.0000000.

Why percentile, not marks

JEE Main runs in about ten shifts, and no two papers are equally hard. Comparing raw marks across shifts would punish anyone who got a tough paper. Percentile only compares you with the students who wrote the same paper, so a topper in a tough shift and a topper in an easy shift both get 100, even if their marks differ.

  • The top scorer of every shift gets 100 percentile. That's why there are several "100 percentilers" each year.
  • Ties get the same percentile. Everyone with the same raw score in a shift gets an identical NTA score.
  • Subject percentiles (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) are worked out the same way and are used to break ties in rank.
  • Two sessions: if you write both January and April, your better total percentile counts for the rank list.

From percentile to rank

All India Rank ≈ (100 − percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100

With 15,38,468 candidates in JEE Main 2026, 99 percentile is about rank 15,385 and 95 percentile about rank 76,923. For the marks behind each percentile, see the percentile vs rank table or pick a target rank.

NEET is different. NEET UG is a single paper on one day, so NTA ranks students directly by marks. Percentile there is only used to set the qualifying cutoff (50th percentile for General).

Questions students ask

How is JEE Main percentile calculated?

Percentile = 100 × number of students in your shift with a raw score equal to or below yours ÷ total students in your shift. It's calculated separately for each shift, to 7 decimals.

Is 99 percentile the same as 99% marks?

No. 99 percentile means you scored the same as or more than 99% of the students in your shift. In 2026 that took about 135–165 marks out of 300, depending on the shift.

Why do two students with the same marks get different percentiles?

Because they wrote different shifts. Percentile compares you only with your own shift, so the same marks in a tougher shift give a higher percentile.

How many students get 100 percentile?

At least one in every shift: whoever has the highest raw score in that shift. With about ten shifts per session, there are usually 20 or more.
