How to derive it
Start from a formula that defines energy, then replace each quantity with its dimensions. M is mass, L is length, T is time.
- KE = ½ × mass × velocity² (½ has no dimensions)
- = [M] × [LT⁻¹]² = [M] × [L²T⁻²]
- So [energy] = [ML²T⁻²], also written [M¹L²T⁻²].
Same dimensions as energy: work, torque, heat. JEE often asks which pairs match.

Questions students ask
What is the dimensional formula of energy?
[ML²T⁻²] (or [M¹L²T⁻²]), from KE = ½mv². Its SI unit is joule (J).
What are the dimensions of energy?
M: 1, L: 2, T: -2.
What is the SI unit of energy?
joule (J).
Which quantities have the same dimensions as energy?
work, torque, heat, all [ML²T⁻²].
