How to work it out

  1. Central atom: Xe, with 8 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 6. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (8 + 6) = 7.
  4. 6 atoms are bonded, so 7 − 6 = 1 lone pair.
  5. 7 electron pairs → sp³d³, pentagonal bipyramidal arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape distorted octahedral.

Why XeF₆ has this shape

There are seven electron pairs around Xe: six bonds and one lone pair. The lone pair can't fit neatly into an octahedron, so XeF₆ is a distorted octahedron, which is how NCERT describes it.

XeF₆ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of XeF₆?

sp³d³. The central Xe has 7 electron pairs around it: 6 bonds and 1 lone pair.

What is the shape of XeF₆?

Distorted octahedral. The electron pairs are arranged pentagonal bipyramidal, but the 1 lone pair is not counted in the shape.

What is the bond angle in XeF₆?

not fixed.

Is XeF₆ polar or nonpolar?

XeF₆ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
