How to work it out
- Central atom: N, with 5 valence electrons.
- Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 0. O and S add nothing.
- Steric number = ½ × (5 + 0 − 1 (positive charge)) = 2.
- 2 atoms are bonded, so 2 − 2 = 0 lone pairs.
- 2 electron pairs → sp, linear arrangement.
Why NO₂⁺ has this shape
It has the same number of electrons as CO₂, so it's linear: O=N=O.
NO₂⁺ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
Other molecules with the same linear shape: BeCl₂, CO₂.

Questions students ask
What is the hybridization of NO₂⁺?
sp. The central N has 2 electron pairs around it: 2 bonds and 0 lone pairs.
What is the shape of NO₂⁺?
Linear. The electron pairs are arranged linear.
What is the bond angle in NO₂⁺?
180°.
Is NO₂⁺ polar or nonpolar?
NO₂⁺ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
