Hybridization of H₂S

H₂S, hydrogen sulphide, is sp³ hybridized. It has a bent (v-shaped) shape with 2 lone pairs on S.

Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: S, with 6 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 2. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (6 + 2) = 4.
  4. 2 atoms are bonded, so 4 − 2 = 2 lone pairs.
  5. 4 electron pairs → sp³, tetrahedral arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape bent (v-shaped).

Why H₂S has this shape

It's like water but with a much smaller angle, about 92°, because sulphur's larger orbitals barely hybridize.

H₂S is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.

Other molecules with the same bent (v-shaped) shape: H₂O.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of H₂S?

sp³. The central S has 4 electron pairs around it: 2 bonds and 2 lone pairs.

What is the shape of H₂S?

Bent (V-shaped). The electron pairs are arranged tetrahedral, but the 2 lone pairs are not counted in the shape.

What is the bond angle in H₂S?

92°, smaller than the ideal tetrahedral angle because lone pairs repel the bonds more.

Is H₂S polar or nonpolar?

H₂S is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
