How to work it out
- Central atom: B, with 3 valence electrons.
- Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 3. O and S add nothing.
- Steric number = ½ × (3 + 3) = 3.
- 3 atoms are bonded, so 3 − 3 = 0 lone pairs.
- 3 electron pairs → sp², trigonal planar arrangement.
Why BF₃ has this shape
B has only three valence electrons, so it forms three bonds and has an incomplete octet. That empty p orbital makes BF₃ a Lewis acid.
BF₃ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
Other molecules with the same trigonal planar shape: SO₃, NO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻.

Questions students ask
What is the hybridization of BF₃?
sp². The central B has 3 electron pairs around it: 3 bonds and 0 lone pairs.
What is the shape of BF₃?
Trigonal planar. The electron pairs are arranged trigonal planar.
What is the bond angle in BF₃?
120°.
Is BF₃ polar or nonpolar?
BF₃ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
