Hybridization of XeO₃

XeO₃, xenon trioxide, is sp³ hybridized. It has a trigonal pyramidal shape with 1 lone pair on Xe.

Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: Xe, with 8 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 0. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (8 + 0) = 4.
  4. 3 atoms are bonded, so 4 − 3 = 1 lone pair.
  5. 4 electron pairs → sp³, tetrahedral arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape trigonal pyramidal.

Why XeO₃ has this shape

Xe forms three Xe=O bonds and keeps one lone pair, so XeO₃ is pyramidal, like NH₃. It's a powerful explosive.

XeO₃ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.

Other molecules with the same trigonal pyramidal shape: PCl₃, NH₃, H₃O⁺.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of XeO₃?

sp³. The central Xe has 4 electron pairs around it: 3 bonds and 1 lone pair.

What is the shape of XeO₃?

Trigonal pyramidal. The electron pairs are arranged tetrahedral, but the 1 lone pair is not counted in the shape.

What is the bond angle in XeO₃?

103°, smaller than the ideal tetrahedral angle because lone pairs repel the bonds more.

Is XeO₃ polar or nonpolar?

XeO₃ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
