Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: Be, with 2 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 2. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (2 + 2) = 2.
  4. 2 atoms are bonded, so 2 − 2 = 0 lone pairs.
  5. 2 electron pairs → sp, linear arrangement.

Why BeCl₂ has this shape

Be uses two sp orbitals for two bonds, 180° apart. In the solid it forms chains, but the gas-phase molecule is linear.

BeCl₂ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.

Other molecules with the same linear shape: CO₂, NO₂⁺.
