Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: N, with 5 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 4. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (5 + 4 − 1 (positive charge)) = 4.
  4. 4 atoms are bonded, so 4 − 4 = 0 lone pairs.
  5. 4 electron pairs → sp³, tetrahedral arrangement.

Why NH₄⁺ has this shape

N uses its lone pair to bond with H⁺. Once formed, all four N–H bonds are identical, so NH₄⁺ is a perfect tetrahedron.

NH₄⁺ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.

Other molecules with the same tetrahedral shape: CH₄, SO₄²⁻, ClO₄⁻.
