OOOS
Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: S, with 6 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 0. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (6 + 0) = 3.
  4. 3 atoms are bonded, so 3 − 3 = 0 lone pairs.
  5. 3 electron pairs → sp², trigonal planar arrangement.

Why SO₃ has this shape

Three equal S=O bonds (through resonance) sit in a flat triangle, with no lone pair on S.

SO₃ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.

Other molecules with the same trigonal planar shape: BF₃, NO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of SO₃?

sp². The central S has 3 electron pairs around it: 3 bonds and 0 lone pairs.

What is the shape of SO₃?

Trigonal planar. The electron pairs are arranged trigonal planar.

What is the bond angle in SO₃?

120°.

Is SO₃ polar or nonpolar?

SO₃ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
