Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: P, with 5 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 6. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (5 + 6 + 1 (negative charge)) = 6.
  4. 6 atoms are bonded, so 6 − 6 = 0 lone pairs.
  5. 6 electron pairs → sp³d², octahedral arrangement.

Why PF₆⁻ has this shape

Six P–F bonds point to the corners of an octahedron, with no lone pairs.

PF₆⁻ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.

Other molecules with the same octahedral shape: SF₆.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of PF₆⁻?

sp³d². The central P has 6 electron pairs around it: 6 bonds and 0 lone pairs.

What is the shape of PF₆⁻?

Octahedral. The electron pairs are arranged octahedral.

What is the bond angle in PF₆⁻?

90°.

Is PF₆⁻ polar or nonpolar?

PF₆⁻ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
