Hybridization of SF₄

SF₄, sulphur tetrafluoride, is sp³d hybridized. It has a see-saw shape with 1 lone pair on S.

Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: S, with 6 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 4. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (6 + 4) = 5.
  4. 4 atoms are bonded, so 5 − 4 = 1 lone pair.
  5. 5 electron pairs → sp³d, trigonal bipyramidal arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape see-saw.

Why SF₄ has this shape

The lone pair takes an equatorial position, where it has only two neighbours at 90° instead of three. The four F atoms then look like a see-saw.

SF₄ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of SF₄?

sp³d. The central S has 5 electron pairs around it: 4 bonds and 1 lone pair.

What is the shape of SF₄?

See-saw. The electron pairs are arranged trigonal bipyramidal, but the 1 lone pair is not counted in the shape.

What is the bond angle in SF₄?

102° and 173°, smaller than the ideal trigonal bipyramidal angle because lone pairs repel the bonds more.

Is SF₄ polar or nonpolar?

SF₄ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
