How to work it out
- Central atom: Cl, with 7 valence electrons.
- Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 3. O and S add nothing.
- Steric number = ½ × (7 + 3) = 5.
- 3 atoms are bonded, so 5 − 3 = 2 lone pairs.
- 5 electron pairs → sp³d, trigonal bipyramidal arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape t-shaped.
Why ClF₃ has this shape
Both lone pairs sit in equatorial positions. The three F atoms form a T, and lone-pair repulsion bends the F–Cl–F angle to about 87.5°.
ClF₃ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
Other molecules with the same t-shaped shape: BrF₃.

Questions students ask
What is the hybridization of ClF₃?
sp³d. The central Cl has 5 electron pairs around it: 3 bonds and 2 lone pairs.
What is the shape of ClF₃?
T-shaped. The electron pairs are arranged trigonal bipyramidal, but the 2 lone pairs are not counted in the shape.
What is the bond angle in ClF₃?
87.5°, smaller than the ideal trigonal bipyramidal angle because lone pairs repel the bonds more.
Is ClF₃ polar or nonpolar?
ClF₃ is polar: its shape means the bond dipoles don't cancel.
