How to work it out
- Central atom: S, with 6 valence electrons.
- Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 6. O and S add nothing.
- Steric number = ½ × (6 + 6) = 6.
- 6 atoms are bonded, so 6 − 6 = 0 lone pairs.
- 6 electron pairs → sp³d², octahedral arrangement.
Why SF₆ has this shape
Six bonds and no lone pairs make a perfect octahedron. The dipoles cancel, so SF₆ is nonpolar, and it's so unreactive that it's used as an insulating gas.
SF₆ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
Other molecules with the same octahedral shape: PF₆⁻.

Questions students ask
What is the hybridization of SF₆?
sp³d². The central S has 6 electron pairs around it: 6 bonds and 0 lone pairs.
What is the shape of SF₆?
Octahedral. The electron pairs are arranged octahedral.
What is the bond angle in SF₆?
90°.
Is SF₆ polar or nonpolar?
SF₆ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
