Thick wedge: towards you. Dashed: away from you. Lobes with two dots: lone pairs.

How to work it out

  1. Central atom: Xe, with 8 valence electrons.
  2. Add 1 for each H or halogen around it: 4. O and S add nothing.
  3. Steric number = ½ × (8 + 4) = 6.
  4. 4 atoms are bonded, so 6 − 4 = 2 lone pairs.
  5. 6 electron pairs → sp³d², octahedral arrangement; the lone pairs make the shape square planar.

Why XeF₄ has this shape

Xe has 8 valence electrons. Four go into bonds with F and four stay as two lone pairs. The two lone pairs sit opposite each other, above and below, so the four F atoms end up in a flat square.

XeF₄ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.

Other molecules with the same square planar shape: ICl₄⁻.

Questions students ask

What is the hybridization of XeF₄?

sp³d². The central Xe has 6 electron pairs around it: 4 bonds and 2 lone pairs.

What is the shape of XeF₄?

Square planar. The electron pairs are arranged octahedral, but the 2 lone pairs are not counted in the shape.

What is the bond angle in XeF₄?

90°.

Is XeF₄ polar or nonpolar?

XeF₄ is nonpolar: its shape is symmetrical, so the bond dipoles cancel out.
