What a rank of 500 means

Rank in JEE Main comes straight from percentile: rank ≈ (100 − percentile) × number of candidates ÷ 100. With 15,38,468 students in 2026, 99.9675 percentile is where 500 students are above you. The marks behind that percentile depend on your shift, because NTA works out percentile separately for every shift.

At this percentile you clear the JEE Advanced cutoff for every category (2026 cutoffs). This is NIT top-branch territory. CSE and ECE at NIT Trichy, Surathkal and Warangal usually close within this range for General students.

This is a Common Rank List (CRL) rank. If you're in a reserved category, your category rank is much smaller than your CRL rank, and that's the rank JoSAA uses for category seats. These are estimates from the 2025 and 2026 marks-vs-percentile pattern.
