Integration of sec x

∫ sec x dx = log|sec x + tan x| + C

Proof

  1. Multiply and divide by (sec x + tan x): ∫ sec x (sec x + tan x)/(sec x + tan x) dx.
  2. Put t = sec x + tan x, so dt = (sec x tan x + sec²x) dx = sec x (sec x + tan x) dx.
  3. The integral becomes ∫ dt/t = log|t| + C = log|sec x + tan x| + C.
  4. Another form: log|tan(π/4 + x/2)| + C.
Check it: differentiate the answer and you should get back sec x. C is the constant of integration; leave it out only in definite integrals.

Questions students ask

What is the integration of sec x?

∫ sec x dx = log|sec x + tan x| + C.

How do you integrate sec x?

Multiply and divide by (sec x + tan x): ∫ sec x (sec x + tan x)/(sec x + tan x) dx. Put t = sec x + tan x, so dt = (sec x tan x + sec²x) dx = sec x (sec x + tan x) dx. The integral becomes ∫ dt/t = log|t| + C = log|sec x + tan x| + C. Another form: log|tan(π/4 + x/2)| + C.

Which method is used to integrate sec x?

Substitution.
