MO diagram of CO

Configuration
(σ1s)² (σ*1s)² (σ2s)² (σ*2s)² (π2pₓ)² (π2pᵧ)² (σ2p)²

Bond order = ½ × (10 − 4) = 3.

With 14 or fewer electrons, π2p fills before σ2p.

What this means

CO has 14 electrons, the same as N₂, so it also has bond order 3 and no unpaired electrons.

Species with the same number of electrons (14), and so the same bond order: N₂, NO⁺, CN⁻.

Bond order, length and stability

A higher bond order means a shorter, stronger bond. The oxygen family is the most asked example:

  • Bond order: O₂⁺ (2.5) > O₂ (2) > O₂⁻ (1.5) > O₂²⁻ (1).
  • Bond length: O₂⁺ < O₂ < O₂⁻ < O₂²⁻, the reverse order.
  • Bond order 0 (He₂, Be₂, Ne₂) means the molecule doesn't exist as a stable species.

Questions students ask

What is the bond order of CO?

3. CO has 10 bonding and 4 antibonding electrons, so ½ × (10 − 4) = 3.

Is CO paramagnetic or diamagnetic?

CO is diamagnetic, with all electrons paired.

What is the electronic configuration of CO?

(σ1s)² (σ*1s)² (σ2s)² (σ*2s)² (π2pₓ)² (π2pᵧ)² (σ2p)².

Does CO exist?

Yes. A bond order of 3 means there's a net bond holding it together.
