The 75% criteria for JEE, explained

Writing JEE Main has no minimum marks: if you've passed Class 12 (or are appearing this year), you can apply. The 75% rule only matters when you take a seat through JoSAA.

  • IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs need at least 75% in Class 12 for General, EWS and OBC-NCL students, and 65% for SC, ST and PwD students.
  • The other route: if you're in the top 20 percentile of your board (for your category), you qualify even below 75%. Each board publishes its own top-20-percentile cutoff marks after results.
  • Which subjects count: Physics, Mathematics, one of Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / a technical vocational subject, a language, and any one more subject. If you have more than five, use the best combination that follows these rules.

NEET eligibility marks

NEET looks only at Physics, Chemistry and Biology together, and you must have passed English. The minimum is 50% for General and EWS, 40% for OBC, SC and ST, 45% for General PwD and 40% for reserved-category PwD.

Grace marks and compartments count. Use the final marks on your passing marksheet. If your board gives grades only, use the marks your board converts them to.

Short of 75%?

You still have options. Check your board's top-20-percentile cutoff once it's out: in many boards it's below 75%. You can also improve your Class 12 marks through your board's improvement exam, and many state and private engineering colleges don't use the 75% rule at all.

Questions students ask

Is 75% compulsory for JEE Main?

No, not to write the exam. You need 75% (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or the top 20 percentile of your board only when you take an IIT, NIT, IIIT or GFTI seat through JoSAA.

Which 5 subjects are counted for the 75% criteria?

Physics, Mathematics, one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject, one language, and any other subject.

Is the 75% rule applicable to JEE Advanced?

Yes. To get an IIT seat after JEE Advanced, you need 75% (65% for SC, ST, PwD) or the top 20 percentile of your board.

What percentage is needed for NEET?

50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology combined for General and EWS, 40% for OBC, SC and ST, and 45% for General PwD.

Do I need 75% in each subject?

No. It's the aggregate across five subjects for JEE, and across Physics, Chemistry and Biology for NEET.
